April Newsletter 2008

Rebecca’s Buzz:

Dear Honey Bears and Bumble Bees,  Where is the year going?  New Years, Valentine’s, St. Patrick’s, Easter, Income Tax Day (almost) next up is Memorial Day and the STRAWBERRY BOOTH @ SUMPTER.  Yes we are doing the Strawberry Booth one last time.  This time we are sharing the duties with Golden Rule Chapter at Nyssa.  They can work on Friday and clean up after the winter, set up and serve, also on Saturday morning.  The Honey Bears need to have people working by 11 am on Saturday and all of Sunday.  Golden Rule will serve and clean up again on Monday so those from the Valley and Portland area can get home before too late Monday.  Remember, this is a very good money maker and is Other People’s Money not just Eastern Star money.  Please, please, please let me know if you can work, we need extra people on Saturday and Sunday but not all at once so sign up so we can schedule everyone at different times and no one is waiting around and getting bored.  There is lots to see and do in Sumpter so come up and enjoy the weekend.

I want to Thank the group for my Valentine candy with the cute bee on the box.  The candy didn’t make it home, once we got to Hap and Patti’s I shared.

I have finished my Schools of Instruction with Creswell Star on March 5th   being the last one.  I do enjoy the Schools and will miss doing them and meeting the membership, maybe we should just start over and continue instruction.

Thanks to all of you who came and helped decorate the Christmas Socks for Jennings McCall residents our year.  Everyone seemed to have fun, even the men got into it.

Joe and I are busy asking Grand Officers for our year, I hope all of you put the 18th of April 2009 on your calendars, as we are going to announce our choices for Grand Officers and the next morning we are having a free breakfast for all the Honey Bears, Bumble Bees and Grand Officers  for our year.  It will be a great time to get together and get to know one another.

Further in this newsletter you will find information on all the upcoming activities.

Honey Bear Love,
Rebecca, the Queen Bee

Joe’s Jive:

Happy Spring and Merry April

Yes, the calendar says it is spring.  It is snowing outside my window as I write this.  However, we will soon be complaining about how hot it is and when will it cool down.  We really are a hard organism to please..

Chapter elections are only a month away.  Are we ready?  While we are being elected to the stations in the West we need to be thinking EAST.  One year from now all of the hard work and planning must be done.  Officers selected, committees appointed and special dates set.  And this is only in our Chapters.  Think what is happening for the Grand Chapter.

Speaking of Grand Chapter, activities begin on Sunday June 15th with the formal opening on Monday morning June 16th.  I hope to see you there.

Sister Stella Bryant, Grand Warder and I can use some help.  Now I know that you conductresses are going to busy but how about those spouses or partners.  Can they give us a couple of two hour sessions on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday working the doors for us?  It is not hard work and there is a lot of visiting that goes along with it.  If any one can help out just report to the Assistant Grand Warders and Sentinels desk in the Roundup Room and volunteer.  We will find a place for you to fill.

I hope to see many of you at the Luau on April 12th in Forest Grove.  It should really be a fun time.

 With Bear Hugs,

 Joe, King Bear

Honeybears:

Spring has sprung!!!!  The bears must come out from hibernating!!!  Before you know it Grand Chapter will be here and we have a “bunch” or work to do.  I hope you have all been sorting through your formals and nice day wear for our “New-To-You booth at Grand Chapter.  If you have put together some clothes that you would like picked up, let Sister Rebecca know and they will make arrangements to have them picked up.  This is your opportunity to do some spring cleaning.  Then when you get to Grand Chapter be prepared to look at all the formals to see what you need to fill those closets back up.  Recycle – recycle – recycle. Remember to sign up and help work in the booth as well.

I hope many of you have purchased your tickets for the luau.  I am looking forward to it and I hope many of you are as well.  It sounds like the food is wonderful as well as the show.  I look forward to seeing everyone there.

We all need to check in at Grand Chapter and see where we can help with proving.  If each one of us takes a session, no one should be burdened with all sessions.  I believe Debbie DeBoer is in charge of the schedule and it will be posted at Grand Chapter, so be sure your name is on the list.

Looking forward to seeing all of you on April 12th for a fun luau!

Patti Nielsen

February Notezz:

The February 2008 meeting of the Honey Bears and the Bumble Bees was held in Dallas at Naomi Chapter on February 9, 2008.  The group met at 10:30 for a Work Party to decorate Christmas Stockings that will be distributed to all residents of Jennings McCall II in December 2009.

President Patti Nielsen called the meeting to order at 12:25 pm.  She introduced Sister Rebecca Price, Grand Conductress and Brother Joe Jarvis, Grand Sentinel.

It was moved and seconded that the minutes of the previous meeting be accepted as printed in the newsletter.  Motion carried.

Treasurer, Sister Mary Maxwell, reported a balance of $4,265.74.  Bills included newsletter expenses, badges and luncheon costs.

Under Visiting and Cheer, reports were made on: Geri Banghart, Ted Beecher (whose surgery is soon) Val Stockhoff, Patti Nielson, Sandi Nyback-Smith, Arnie Buchan and Daneen Overcash.

Old Business:

We hope that Everyone remembers that Sister Rebecca has a new email address:  rmprice@q.com  So neat and tidy.

The prototype for the bags to be used for our 2009 Grand Session was displayed and Jean Cartwright moved and Judie Kissinger seconded that we approve the order for embroidery for 400 bags @ $2 each for the designs as developed by Linda Angel.  Motion carried.

Jean Cartwright moved and Judie Kissinger seconded that we authorize Sister Rebecca Price to develop a ½ page ad for the 2008 Year Book with pictures of the Grand Conductress and the Grand Sentinel at a cost of $50.  Motion carried.

Sister Rebecca reported that the Honey Bears and Bumble Bees will have a luncheon scheduled at Grand Chapter for     Tuesday at noon at the Convention Center, cost to be $11.  We should all invite our Associate Patrons-elect.  To obtain that price, we need to have sufficient attendees.

Our primary fund-raiser at Grand Chapter will be the NEW 2 YOU booth.  Items for this booth are literally pouring in and we will hope to make at least $1600.   Lyn Horine-Burgess offered to chair this event, with assistance of Jean Cartwright and any others who would like to model items.  Setup for this booth will begin Saturday morning, June 14, 2008 around 9 a.m.  Anyone having items for this booth should contact Lyn at l.horine@comcast.net  or bring items to the Luau in April for transport to Pendleton.  Items may also be brought to Pendleton.

Formal dresses are generally priced at $10, however if someone wishes to designate a higher price for a particular garment, this should be noted on a paper pinned to the garment.  Should the owner of that garment (or article) wish it to be returned if not sold for the designated amount, that information should be explicitly be indicated as well and the owner should claim the garment (or article) by the end of Grand Chapter.

Sister Rebecca reported that the mementos that we selected have been completed (120 of them) and they are now in Eastern Oregon and they are paid for.

Sister Anne Christman has agreed to chair the All Membership Banquet for 2009.  Members agreed that in lieu of individual table favors we will make a donation to Home Endowment and note this in the programs.  Table decorations have already been purchased and will have to be put together, another work party.

Judie Kissinger and Debbie deBoer will assume responsibilities for Proving the Grand Chapter and all HB & BBs should make themselves available to assist in this responsibility.

There was animated discussion of the Strawberry Booth at the Sumpter Flea Market on Memorial Day weekend, May 23 – 26, 2008.  The Oregon Gems will be conducting a different major fundraiser and so our group will have responsibility for the May 2008 Strawberry booth event.

Six people are needed for each shift and the heaviest day is Saturday.  It was noted that the most satisfactory way to transport cupcakes to the event is to actually bake them in Eastern Oregon.  Members of Golden Rule Chapter will assist the HB & BBs in this effort and will also receive a portion of the funds received for this project.  A schedule of times to work in the booth will be developed and we are reminded that when we are not working in the booth, there is “good Junque” and good food available in the myriad booths on site.

Sister Rebecca reminded us of the Luau at Pacific University on April 12, 2008.  Cost for the whole program is $23, with checks made to Sister Rebecca and sent NOW.

We all should be thinking about ideas for our summer picnic which should also include election of a new slate of Officers.  There will also be sign-up sheets for work times at the New2You booth at Grand Chapter included in our next newsletter.

For those who set their calendars ahead, please note that the announcement of Grand Officers for the 2009-2010 year will be made on April 18, 2009 at the auditorium in Nyssa Oregon.  There will also be a breakfast Sunday, April 19, 2009.

The Grand Reception for Sister Rebecca and Brother Joe in their WGM/WGP year will be combined and will possibly be held in Summerville in September and will include a FREE  BBQ for all attending.

The group sang Happy Birthday to You to Brother Joe (we were advised to still keep our day jobs as we haven’t improved that much…)

Sister Carolyn presented Valentines to Sister Rebecca and Brother Joe.   Her candy box had bees on it and his had bears.  (or maybe it was the other way around)

We thanked Naomi Chapter and Sister Patti Baldwin for the delightful luncheon.  Tom Kissinger enjoyed the egg salad sandwiches!

Respectfully submitted
