Meeting of the Honeybears, May 19, 2007

The May 2007 meeting of the Honey Bears was held at Pioneer Chapter at 11:30 a.m. Carolyn Beecher, chair, convened the meeting and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Honored guests included Sister Rebecca Price, Associate Grand Conductress and Sister Connie Harris, Grand Treasurer of the Grand Chapter of Oregon. Grand Committee members present were Barbara Collins, Faith Committee, Special Activities, Carolyn Patrick, Year Book, Lyn Horine-Burgess chair of Banquets, and Barbara Folck, chair of Registration. Worthy Matrons present were Sister Rebecca Price, WM of Golden Rule Chapter and Sister Connie Harris, WM of Daphne Chapter. Brother Joe Jarvis, WP of Blue Mountain Chapter and candidate for Grand Sentinel.

Minutes of the April 2007 meeting were approved as distributed via email and regular mail. Sister Rebecca welcomed the Associate Conductresses-elect who had joined us for the day and reminded us that Grand Chapter is fast approaching. Chairs of Grand Committees present heartily concurred.

Under Visiting and Cheer, Sister Carolyn reported that our Treasurer, Sister Mary Maxwell has a very bad cold and is not with us today, and Brother Jack Maxwell is continuing to improve. She also reported that Sister Florence Straight has been staying in Eugene where her husband has been hospitalized with heart issues. We will remember her in our prayers and will also send cards to her and wish her our best.

Sister Carolyn called for a recess so that we could enjoy the great bowls of potato soup and the wonderful salad bar plus strawberry shortcake prepared by the members of Pioneer Chapter. Following the luncheon, AC-elects present met in another part of the building to plan for their upcoming work.

Treasury balance from the end of the April meeting was $1,742 with three bills, one for luncheon of $90, one for printing of newsletters for $24.00and $41 for a roll of stamps. Sister Patti moved and it was seconded that our bills be paid. Motion passed.

Unfinished Business

Baskets for Grand Chapter were discussed. All members have received tickets for the Pendleton Basket and many have paid for those already. Judie Kissinger is completing the “men’s” basket and Jean Cartwright is doing the “couples” basket. Anyone having additional items for those baskets should get them to Judie or Jean now or bring them to Pendleton. It was decided that baskets and tickets will be displayed at our Ways and Means table and that any member with time should work at the table whenever possible.

Sister Carolyn Patrick reported that we have 47 dozen cupcakes for Sumpter, some of which she will take with her today. Sister Carolyn Beecher will bring the rest of the cupcakes in her motor home next weekend. Sister Rebecca was able to purchase all needed berries on special and she believes there will be sufficient volunteers for Memorial Day weekend. All items will show as expenses now, but after expenses, the rest will be profit.

Plans for our summer picnic were discussed with four options offered:

  • 1. Cascade Locks Sternwheeler - $25 for the ride only, $46 max for the ride and brunch, boarding at 10:30 and sailing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • 2. Evergreen Museum in McMinnville – entry fee $10-$11
  • 3. Mt. Hood train ride from Hood River - $80 for dinner and $70 for brunch
  • 4. Portland Spirit - $34-$42 lunch and ride on the Willamette River.

After much consideration of times, costs, and dates, Sister Jean Cartwright moved that the Honey Bears’ summer fun picnic be held on August 18 on the Sternwheeler at Cascade Locks. Sister Carolyn Patrick seconded. Motion passed unanimously because this will also be Sister Rebecca’s birthday! Information will be sent via postcards and email.

Proving was discussed. Sister Terry already has the emblems ready for our use and we will need 4 or 5 persons at the opening of each session. We should all wear our Honey Bear dresses. If we gather at our Ways and Means Table immediately prior to the opening of any session, the emblems can be distributed and we will have sufficient Associate Conductresses to prove the north side.

New Business

Sister Rebecca presented a tentative schedule of our meetings for the 2007-2008 year, beginning on Sept. 29 in Salem preceding Brother Hunt Compton’s reception. We will meet for lunch at a local Chapter.

November 17, we will meet in La Grande or Elgin for our business meeting, and go to the Stampede Grounds in Elgin for an “everybody welcome” roast beef dinner preceding the reception for Sister Rebecca and, we trust, Brother Joe Jarvis. Blue Mt. Chapter will probably host our luncheon.

Our Christmas party will be in December and we must all be formulating our ideas for how and where we will celebrate this event – as long as the chocolate fountain is present.

Our next meeting will be February 2, at Naomi Chapter in Dallas for a work party to make banners and to work on the Christmas stockings for JMII residents for our WM year.

In April, we will be attending the Luau at Pacific University in Forest Grove and the cost of this event will include dinner and entertainment and a ribbon lei. Postcards will remind of us of the need to make firm reservations for this wonderful event which is sponsored by parents of university students from Hawaii.

Saturday May 10 will have a working meeting, probably at Tualatin Chapter in Hillsboro.

Sister Jean Cartwright moved that we review our by-laws and propose any amendments needed to hold other than monthly meetings. Motion seconded and passed. With the price of gas increasing and the reality that those attending these meetings are usually the same members every time no matter what part of the state we meet in, we can conduct our business very well and get the required work accomplished with fewer meetings.

It was decided that following the 2007 Grand Chapter, minutes will only be mailed to those members especially requesting them. All others will be sent via email, with a hard copy only if requested.

Jean Cartwright reported for the Nominating Committee that the following were nominated:

  • President Patti Nielsen
  • Vice-Pres. Tom Kissinger
  • Rec. Sec. ‘lyn Horine-Burgess
  • Treasurer Mary Maxwell
  • Corresp Sec Debbi deBoer

There being no further nominations, the secretary was instructed to cast a unanimous ballot for the candidates. Motion passed.

The president thanked all for their service to the Honey Bears.

Sister Rebecca reported that the next General Grand Chapter will be in October 2009 in Oklahoma. This follows Sister Rebecca’s installation as WGM and her friend and counterpart from Idaho who will also be WGM, has been planning a trip to Branson Mo. prior to the General Grand session. Sister Rebecca hopes that our members can join this event . We could then attend General Grand session following our visit to Branson. She will keep us advised of arrangements for this special event.

Sister Rebecca and Brother Joe were then excused from the meeting while important plans were made by the rest of the group.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted
